CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Claire was suddenly back in the room. Falling back. Lying on the bedroom floor. Wilson stared down at her, genuine concern etched on his face. Over his shoulder she could see the officer from earlier.
âAre you ok? What the hell happened?â It was Wilson.
âYes. Yes⦠Iâm fine. Iâ¦â Claire stood up, glad to find her legs were strong enough, firm enough to support her.
âI just need some fresh air.â She tried to walk past Wilson, but he pulled her gently but firmly to the corner of the room, away from the inquisitive eyes of the officers.
âClaire,â he said gripping her shoulders, his face inches from hers forcing her to return his look. âYou are not ok. No one would be ok, after having gone through what you did. What is also not ok is you lying to me, even if you think itâs the best thing to do.â
She looked back at this man, enjoying the cold wall on her back, and wished she could just tell him everything.
âNow the only way we are going to work together, and more importantly work together to solve this case, to catch this⦠this maniac who is killing these women is one, if we are completely honest with each other, and two, we admit when we need help. Whatever that help looks like.â
It was the longest speech she had heard Wilson make, and she knew every part of it was not only from the heart, but was also the truth.
Her expression softened and she felt his grip relax.
âYou are right,â she said. âIâ¦I am ok, itâs just I occasionally have dizzy spells. Must have been something in the water of the olâ Mississippi I guessâ¦â
Wilson stared at her, concern on his face, and she knew he didnât believe she had told him the whole truth even now, but he let go of her shoulders.
âThanks Wilson. But honestly, Iâm fine. I do just need some air.â
He let her pass, and she walked steadily out of the room, through the doorway and into the street. Her head was spinning, but she was already feeling calmer. A couple of minutes outside and she would be back to herself.
The chilly evening air felt good. Claire sucked in great lungsful, enjoyed its freshness and the breeze on her face. Imagined it blowing away the fear, the confusion that had overwhelmed her at the murder scene. She stopped just beyond the line of tape, past the officer on guard. Closed her eyes. Breathed in one, two deep breaths.
But there was something wrong.
The feeling of being watched engulfed her. She opened her eyes, a frown creasing her features. Swung her head left and right scanning the dark, almost deserted streets. Nothing. A car drove off, at speed, but then nothing. Only silence. The feeling that someone was watching her, studying her had evaporated, leaving her alone with her thoughts. With a myriad of questions. With so few answers.
But she knew she had to do something, had to try to make sense of it all.
